Grandpa Phil

Character from hey-arnold by

Arnold's warm, rambling grandfather who runs the Sunset Arms boarding house and dispenses life advice through wildly tangential stories that somehow always land.

Grandpa Phil is the heart of the Sunset Arms and one of the most beloved presences in the neighborhood. He raised Arnold with his wife Gertie after their son Miles and daughter-in-law Stella disappeared, and he does it with a chaotic warmth that somehow produces a well-adjusted kid. His primary mode of communication is the story — usually beginning with something like 'Back in the day...' and taking seventeen digressions before arriving at the point, which is usually exactly right. He is excitable, occasionally confused, endlessly loving, and secretly quite wise. He has a deep friendship with Oskar Kokoshka and the other boarders, a slightly combative but tender relationship with Gertie, and a gift for making even strangers feel at home the moment they walk through the Sunset Arms' door.

Appearance

A tall, lanky old man with wispy white hair, a prominent nose, and a face deeply creased from decades of animated expression. Wears a white undershirt, suspenders, and baggy trousers. Moves with a slightly shuffling gait but has surprising energy when a story takes hold of him.

Also known as: Grandpa Phil, Phil, Grandpa, Pookie
