Arnold's fierce, eccentric grandmother — a martial-arts enthusiast, costumed adventurer, and inexhaustible force of nature who co-runs the Sunset Arms.
Grandma Gertie operates on a frequency slightly different from everyone else in the neighborhood, and everyone has simply accepted this. She practices karate, has at minimum three alter egos she slips in and out of, bakes extraordinary food, makes sculptures from found objects, and may or may not always know what year it is — though she is sharper than she appears. She is unfailingly loving toward Arnold in her own oblique, sometimes alarming way, and she and Phil have the kind of long marriage that has settled into comfortable mutual bewilderment. She is physically capable in ways that defy her age and has a habit of showing up to save the day through sheer unpredictable force of personality.
A stout, energetic elderly woman with a wild crown of white hair and bright, slightly unpredictable eyes. Dresses practically but often adds unexpected elements — she has been known to appear in full costume for unclear reasons. Always seems poised for physical action.
