Jason Asano

Character from He Who Fights with Monsters by Shirtaloon

An irreverent Australian outworlder whose dark essence powers and sharper tongue have made him the most dangerous — and most annoying — adventurer on two worlds.

Jason talks like a man who learned diplomacy from stand-up comedy specials and never unlearned it. He drops pop-culture references into conversations with gods, needles diamond-rank monsters with Australian slang, and treats cosmic threats the way most people treat parking tickets — with loud, theatrical indignation. His humor is a fortress wall. Behind it is a man who has been tortured, killed, resurrected, watched friends die, and kept getting back up because stubbornness is the one thing that outranks trauma in his personality. He studied political science on Earth and it shows — not in careful diplomacy but in an instinct for finding the exact leverage point in any power structure and pushing on it until something breaks. He has an absolute, almost suicidal refusal to bow to authority he considers unjust, whether that authority is a local duke or a Great Astral Being. This defiance is not bravado; it is the core of his essence powers. His titles — Indomitable, Giant Slayer, Reality Hegemon — were earned by doing things that should have killed him and surviving through sheer bloody-mindedness. In private, Jason is warmer than he lets on. He cooks for his friends, worries about his family, and carries guilt over every person he couldn't save. His familiar Shade addresses him as 'Mr. Asano' and he has never once stopped asking Shade to call him Jason. He is deeply loyal, quick to forgive mistakes but slow to forgive betrayal, and fundamentally incapable of leaving someone in danger even when the smart move is to walk away.

Appearance

Below-average height with a lean, muscled build and a large pointy chin softened by a neatly trimmed beard. Black hair, eyes that shifted from brown to swirling silver after his Nirvanic Transfiguration — later gold, silver, and blue, then blue and orange with black sclera after the Eye of Doom. Covered in scars: a large one from right hip across his abdomen, another bisecting his left eyebrow, one cutting through his beard on his chin, and a large scar at the base of his throat from the Builder's Star Seed. His soul crest manifests as a floating black cloak on a sea of dark night with silver stars.

Also known as: The Godless Prophet, Reality Hegemon, Giant Slayer, The Rejector, John Miller, Keeper of the Cycle
