Heaven's annual purge of Hell — a systematic slaughter of demons by Exorcist angels, authorized by Sera and led (until his death) by Adam.
The Extermination is the defining event of Hell's existence. Once a year, Exorcist angels descend and kill demons to control Hell's population. It was authorized by Sera, led by Adam, and executed with enthusiasm by Lute and the Exorcist army. Demons can only truly die from angelic steel, so the Extermination is the one time each year when death is real. The Season 1 Extermination was different. For the first time, demons fought back — organized by Charlie, armed by Carmilla, supported by Rosie's cannibals. Adam was killed. Sir Pentious was redeemed. The entire premise of the Extermination — that it was necessary and that demons couldn't resist — was proven false in a single battle.
The Extermination manifests as a portal opening in Hell's red sky, through which thousands of white-and-gold armored Exorcist angels descend carrying angelic steel weapons. The sky darkens. Alarms sound across Pentagram City. The Clock Tower hits zero. For the duration of the purge, Pentagram City becomes a war zone — angelic light cutting through hellfire, screams echoing through streets, and demons running or hiding or dying.
