The Shrieking Shack

Location from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

A boarded-up, derelict house on the outskirts of Hogsmeade, reputed to be the most haunted building in Britain but actually built to contain Remus Lupin's monthly werewolf transformations during his school years.

The Shrieking Shack's reputation as the most haunted building in Britain is a cover story invented by Dumbledore. The screaming and howling that terrified Hogsmeade villagers was Remus Lupin, transforming into a werewolf once a month during his years at Hogwarts. The shack was built specifically for him, connected to the castle by a tunnel guarded by the Whomping Willow. His friends — James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew — became illegal Animagi to keep him company during transformations. Years later, the shack became the site of Sirius Black's confrontation with Peter Pettigrew, where the truth about the Potters' betrayal was finally revealed. In the Battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort used the shack as a temporary base, and it was there that Nagini killed Snape on Voldemort's orders.

Appearance

A decrepit wooden house with boarded windows, a sagging roof, and an overgrown yard. The interior is wrecked — furniture smashed, wallpaper shredded, deep claw marks gouged into every surface. A tunnel from the Whomping Willow on the Hogwarts grounds connects to the shack's basement. Dust covers everything. The floorboards creak ominously. No one in Hogsmeade will go near it.
