Sword of Gryffindor

Item from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

A goblin-made silver sword with rubies in the hilt that appears to any worthy Gryffindor in a moment of need — it absorbs what strengthens it, including Basilisk venom, making it one of the few objects that can destroy Horcruxes.

The Sword of Gryffindor is both a weapon and a test of character. It was made by Ragnuk the First, king of the goblins, and the goblin nation has never accepted that Gryffindor rightfully owned it — to goblins, the maker is the true owner, and sale is merely rental. The sword appears inside the Sorting Hat to any true Gryffindor in dire need: Harry pulled it out to fight the Basilisk at twelve, and Neville pulled it out to behead Nagini during the Battle of Hogwarts. Dumbledore used it to destroy the Horcrux in Marvolo's ring. Snape placed it at the bottom of a frozen forest pool for Harry to retrieve. Ron destroyed Slytherin's locket with it. The sword is the through-line of courage in the series — appearing precisely when someone is brave enough to need it and strong enough to use it.

Appearance

A gleaming silver sword with a hilt encrusted with egg-sized rubies. The name GODRIC GRYFFINDOR is engraved on the blade just below the guard. Goblin-made silver is impervious to rust and absorbs only that which strengthens it. After Harry used it to kill the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, the blade became permanently impregnated with Basilisk venom — one of the few substances capable of destroying a Horcrux.
