Cloak of Invisibility

Item from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

A shimmering silvery cloak that renders the wearer completely invisible — the third Deathly Hallow — unique among invisibility cloaks because it never fades, tears, or loses its power over time.

The Cloak of Invisibility passed from Ignotus Peverell through his descendants to the Potter family, and from James Potter to Harry via Dumbledore, who had borrowed it before James's death. It is the only Hallow that works exactly as advertised with no tragic consequences — the story says the third brother used it to hide from Death until old age, then passed it to his son and greeted Death as an old friend. Harry used it constantly from his first year: sneaking into the Restricted Section, visiting the Mirror of Erised, infiltrating Hogsmeade without a permission slip, and countless other infractions that would have gotten him expelled if caught. The cloak is impervious to Summoning Charms and most revealing spells, though Dumbledore could see through it (possibly because he once possessed all three Hallows), and Moody's magical eye could penetrate it. Of the three Hallows, Harry kept only this one — the one his father wore, the one that protects rather than destroys.

Appearance

A large, flowing cloak of silvery, shimmering fabric that feels like water woven into material. When draped over someone, it renders them completely invisible — not just camouflaged but truly gone, invisible even to most magical detection. Unlike ordinary invisibility cloaks, which lose their power within years, this one has remained perfect for centuries. It folds small enough to fit in a pocket.

Also known as: the Invisibility Cloak, Invisibility Cloak, the Cloak, Harry's cloak, the Cloak of Invisibility
