Firebolt

Item from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

The finest racing broomstick in the world — ash handle, aerodynamic birch twigs, built-in braking charm — given to Harry anonymously by Sirius Black and the broom that carried Gryffindor to the Quidditch Cup.

The Firebolt arrived on Christmas morning in Harry's third year, wrapped without a card, and immediately became the most controversial gift in Hogwarts history. Hermione, suspecting it was cursed and sent by Sirius Black (then believed to be a murderer trying to kill Harry), reported it to McGonagall, who confiscated it for testing. The resulting fight between Harry, Ron, and Hermione lasted weeks. The broom was eventually returned, curse-free, and Harry used it to win the Quidditch Cup — catching the Snitch to clinch the match against Slytherin in what Oliver Wood considered the greatest moment of his life. The Firebolt was actually sent by Sirius, who bought it via owl-order using Crookshanks to carry the order form. It was not a murder weapon. It was a godfather trying, for the first time, to give his godson something good.

Appearance

A sleek broomstick with a polished ash handle and perfectly aligned birch twigs that taper aerodynamically. The handle inscription reads 'Firebolt' in gold lettering. It hovers at exactly the right height for mounting. The acceleration is instant — zero to one hundred and fifty miles per hour in ten seconds. It responds to the lightest touch and can execute pinpoint turns at full speed. International Quidditch teams use it as their standard broom.

Also known as: the Firebolt, Firebolt, Harry's broomstick
