Basilisk Fang

Item from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

An enormous, curved, lethally venomous tooth from the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets — one of the few substances capable of destroying Horcruxes, first used when Harry drove one through Tom Riddle's diary.

The Basilisk fang is proof that the most important weapon in a war can be a snake tooth pulled from your own arm by a twelve-year-old. When Harry killed the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, one of its fangs broke off in his arm — he survived only because Fawkes the phoenix wept into the wound. Years later, the remaining fangs in the dead Basilisk's skull became critical assets in the Horcrux hunt. Harry used a fang to destroy Tom Riddle's diary without understanding what he'd done. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione returned to the Chamber specifically to collect fangs — Hermione used one to destroy Hufflepuff's Cup. The Basilisk had been dead for five years by then, but its venom remained potent. Basilisk venom is also what makes the Sword of Gryffindor a Horcrux-killer: goblin-made silver absorbs what strengthens it, and the sword has been impregnated with the venom since Harry used it to kill the serpent.

Appearance

A long, curved, razor-sharp fang — the size of a short sword — ivory-colored with a wicked point. Basilisk venom is one of the most destructive substances in the wizarding world: it dissolves almost anything, has no known antidote except phoenix tears, and is one of the few things that can damage an object beyond magical repair — the key property that makes it lethal to Horcruxes.

Also known as: Basilisk fang, the Basilisk fang, Basilisk fangs, basilisk venom
