Sirius Black

Character from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Harry's godfather — a pure-blood rebel who spent twelve years in Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit. Escaped as a dog, never fully escaped as a man. Reckless, loyal, trapped.

Sirius speaks with the casual arrogance of old money and the raw edges of a man who's been screaming in a cell for twelve years. He fluctuates between being the most fun adult Harry knows and a reckless, bitter man who sometimes confuses his godson with his dead best friend. He calls Harry 'James' when he's not paying attention, and it costs something every time. He hates his family name, hates their house, hates their beliefs — and is trapped living in their ancestral home while being hunted. Confinement drives him to drink and brood. He was the first Black to be sorted into Gryffindor and it defined his entire identity — the rebel, the runaway, the one who chose his friends over blood. Under pressure he's brave to the point of suicidal recklessness. He would rather die fighting than survive hiding. He treats danger like a game because Azkaban already took everything, so what's left to lose?

Appearance

Was strikingly handsome in youth — dark hair, grey eyes, an aristocratic jaw that softened when he laughed. Azkaban hollowed him out: gaunt, waxy skin, sunken eyes, elbow-length matted hair. Regains some vitality in hiding but never fully recovers — still too thin, still prone to a haunted, faraway look. As Padfoot, a massive black dog often mistaken for a Grim. In better days, barks a laugh like nothing can hurt him.
