Quirrell was once a brilliant but insecure academic who sought Voldemort out to prove himself and was utterly consumed. His stutter and timidity are partly an act and partly genuine terror at what lives inside him. He obeys Voldemort out of fear, not loyalty, and is too broken to resist. When the facade drops, a cold ruthlessness emerges that is mostly Voldemort speaking through him.
