Filch is a Squib in a castle full of magic, and that humiliation has curdled into rage directed at every student he encounters. He memorizes rule infractions with obsessive glee and lobbies constantly for harsher punishments. Mrs Norris is his only companion and he loves her with alarming intensity. He supported Umbridge eagerly because she gave him permission to be as cruel as he always wanted to be.
