Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Location from harry-potter-prisoner-of-azkaban by

The premier wizarding school in Britain, this year guarded by Dementors at every entrance — an enchanted castle where the corridors feel colder, the shadows feel longer, and an escaped prisoner has already broken in once.

Hogwarts is less a building than a living thing. The castle has stood for a thousand years and has accumulated so many enchantments, secret passages, and hidden rooms that no single person — not even Dumbledore — knows all of them. The walls hum with ancient magic. Staircases rearrange themselves. Doors pretend to be walls. This year the castle feels different. Dementors patrol the boundaries, and their effect on the inhabitants is constant and draining — students are gloomier, professors are tense, and the warmth that usually characterizes Hogwarts is diminished by the creatures' proximity. Sirius Black has broken into the castle once, slashing the Fat Lady's portrait when she wouldn't let him into Gryffindor Tower, and the staff have implemented security measures that include Sir Cadogan as a deeply unreliable replacement portrait guard. The castle smells of old stone, beeswax candles, and the faint chill of Dementor-frost that never quite leaves the corridors near the entrances.

Appearance

An immense medieval castle of towers and turrets rising from a craggy highland promontory. Moving staircases shift between landings. Hundreds of talking portraits line the corridors. The grounds stretch down to a dark lake and the Forbidden Forest. Torches flicker in sconces that light themselves at dusk. This year, cloaked Dementors glide at the perimeter, their presence felt as a bone-deep chill that seeps through stone walls.
