Hogsmeade is freedom — and this year, Harry can't have it. Uncle Vernon refused to sign his permission form after Harry accidentally inflated Aunt Marge, so while Ron and Hermione explore Honeydukes and drink butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks, Harry is stuck at the castle. Until Fred and George give him the Marauder's Map and show him the passage behind the one-eyed witch statue that leads to Honeydukes' cellar. Harry sneaks into Hogsmeade under the Invisibility Cloak and overhears a conversation in the Three Broomsticks between McGonagall, Hagrid, Flitwick, and Cornelius Fudge — learning for the first time that Sirius Black was his parents' best friend, their Secret-Keeper, and Harry's own godfather. The village also contains the Shrieking Shack, visible from the edge of town, where the climactic confrontation of the year will take place.
A picturesque village of thatched-roof cottages and small shops dusted with snow, its main street winding between the Three Broomsticks, Honeydukes, Zonko's Joke Shop, the Hog's Head, and Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop. Hogwarts students in scarves and cloaks crowd the street on weekend visits, clutching bags of sweets and bottles of butterbeer.
