The Great Hall

Location from harry-potter-prisoner-of-azkaban by

The main dining and assembly hall of Hogwarts, where the enchanted ceiling mirrors a sky that seems stormier than usual this year and the staff table holds a new Defence professor in shabby robes.

The Great Hall is where Hogwarts happens. The Sorting Ceremony, the start-of-term feast, Dumbledore's announcements about the Dementors stationed at the gates — all beneath that impossible ceiling. This year Dumbledore warns students that Dementors will be guarding the school and that no student should give a Dementor reason to harm them. Lupin sits at the staff table in his patched robes, looking shabby but alert. The morning post arrives by owl, and the Daily Prophet keeps running Sirius Black's hollow-eyed photograph. The room is still warm and bright, but the awareness of what patrols outside its walls makes the candlelight feel more fragile.

Appearance

A cavernous stone hall lit by thousands of candles hovering in midair. Four long wooden tables run the length of the room, one for each house, with a raised staff table at the far end on a dais. The ceiling is bewitched to reflect the sky outside. Golden plates and goblets appear at mealtimes, filled by house-elves working in the kitchens below. Banners in house colors hang from the walls.
