When he discovers Lupin helped Sirius Black into the castle — as he sees it — every old wound reopens. In the Shrieking Shack he refuses to listen to explanations, refuses to consider that Black might be innocent, because admitting that would mean his boyhood enemies were right and he was wrong. He wants Sirius kissed by Dementors with a viciousness that has nothing to do with justice.
