Peter Pettigrew

Character from harry-potter-prisoner-of-azkaban by

The cowardly Marauder who betrayed the Potters to Voldemort and has spent twelve years hiding as Scabbers, Ron's pet rat, waiting in the Weasley household while an innocent man rotted in Azkaban.

Peter gravitates to the strongest person in the room and attaches himself like a parasite. He flatters, grovels, and performs loyalty while calculating escape routes. As a student he was the least talented Marauder — James, Sirius, and Remus were brilliant and he orbited them, laughing at their jokes, fetching their things, basking in reflected glory. When Voldemort rose to power, Peter chose the winning side. He became the Potters' Secret-Keeper at Sirius's suggestion — Sirius thought the switch from himself to Peter would be unexpected — and Peter immediately betrayed James and Lily to Voldemort. When Sirius confronted him, Peter screamed that Sirius had killed the Potters, cut off his own finger, blew up the street killing twelve Muggles, and escaped as a rat in the chaos. He's been Scabbers ever since, hiding with the Weasleys, sleeping in a child's bed, listening, waiting. When cornered in the Shrieking Shack he weeps and begs, invoking old friendships he himself destroyed. Harry spares his life — a mercy that terrifies Peter more than death, because now he owes a life debt to the son of the man he murdered.

Appearance

Small, watery eyes, pointed nose, thinning colorless hair. Rat-like features even in human form. Missing a finger on his right hand — he cut it off himself to fake his own death. Hunched, twitchy posture. As Scabbers, a fat grey rat missing a toe on his front paw, mangy and old for a common garden rat because he isn't one.

Also known as: Wormtail, Peter, Scabbers, Peter Pettigrew, Pettigrew
