Hogwarts' resident poltergeist — not a ghost but a spirit of chaos — who gleefully composes rude songs about Sirius Black breaking into the castle and pelts students with whatever isn't nailed down.
Peeves exists to cause maximum disruption with maximum glee. He drops water balloons, unscrews chandeliers, writes rude songs, and pelts people with chalk. He obeys no one except the Bloody Baron, and even that obedience is grudging. This year he's particularly delighted by the chaos surrounding Sirius Black's break-in — he composes songs about it and performs them at top volume in the corridors. He's also an obstacle for anyone trying to sneak around the castle at night, as he'll gleefully report students to Filch unless they're interesting enough to follow.
Small, dark-complexioned, wicked face, wide mouth. Bell-covered hat. Can become invisible. Not translucent like ghosts — more solid, more colorful, more annoying. Cackles echo through corridors before he appears.
