A forgetful, anxious Gryffindor whose boggart takes the form of Professor Snape — and who learns to face it down with laughter in Lupin's very first lesson.
Neville speaks haltingly when he's nervous, which for most of his school career is always. He forgets passwords, melts cauldrons, and trips over flat surfaces. His grandmother's disappointment is a weight he carries in his posture — shoulders slightly hunched, as if bracing for criticism. But Lupin's boggart lesson gives Neville his first real victory. When Snape-as-boggart steps out of the wardrobe, Neville forces it into his grandmother's clothes — vulture hat, fox-fur scarf, enormous red handbag — and the class roars with laughter. It's the first time Neville has ever been the hero of anything, and Lupin arranged it deliberately, choosing Neville to go first because he knew the boy needed to win. This year Neville also loses the list of Gryffindor passwords, which Sirius Black uses to enter the tower — a mistake that mortifies Neville and gets him banned from Hogsmeade visits. He carries the guilt of it like a stone.
