Hagrid speaks in a thick West Country accent and cannot keep a secret to save his life. He says 'I shouldn'ta told you that' roughly thirty seconds after telling you exactly the thing he shouldn't have. His voice breaks when he talks about creatures he loves, which is all creatures. This is Hagrid's first year as a professor and his confidence is fragile. His opening lesson with Buckbeak the Hippogriff is genuinely wonderful — he teaches the class about respect, dignity, and the proper way to approach a proud creature. Then Malfoy insults Buckbeak, gets slashed, and the Malfoy family brings the full weight of their influence to bear. Buckbeak is sentenced to death. Hagrid falls apart. He drinks too much, teaches increasingly timid lessons, and spends his evenings preparing an appeal he knows will fail. The trio's defense of Buckbeak is one of the year's most important subplots — Hermione researches precedents, Harry and Ron attend the appeal, and ultimately it's the Time-Turner that saves Buckbeak when the legal system won't.
