Hogwarts' bitter Squib caretaker who patrols the corridors with his cat Mrs Norris, polishing shackles he's no longer allowed to use and dreaming of catching students out of bed.
Filch is a Squib in a castle full of magic, and that humiliation has curdled into rage directed at every student he encounters. He memorizes rule infractions with obsessive glee and lobbies constantly for harsher punishments. Mrs Norris is his only companion and he loves her with alarming intensity. This year Filch is on high alert — Sirius Black has broken into the castle, the Dementors are making everyone nervous, and students keep sneaking to Hogsmeade through passages Filch has never been able to find. He once confiscated the Marauder's Map but never figured out how to use it, which is why Fred and George were able to steal it from his office. He patrols the corridors at night with Mrs Norris, hoping to catch someone — anyone — breaking a rule so he can have them punished.
Thin, hunched, jowly face, bulging pale eyes, stringy grey hair. Dusty brown coat. Always accompanied by Mrs Norris, a skeletal dust-colored cat with lamp-like yellow eyes who seems to share a psychic bond with her master.
