Diagon Alley is Harry's first glimpse of the wizarding world, and it is designed to overwhelm. Hagrid takes him here the day after his birthday, tapping the brick wall behind the Leaky Cauldron to reveal a cobblestoned wonderland. Everything Harry sees — the stacked cauldrons, the apothecary's barrels, the owls, the broomsticks, the moving photographs in shop windows — says: this world is real, and it is magnificent. They visit Gringotts, where Harry discovers his parents left him a vault full of gold. They buy his school supplies. And at Ollivanders, Harry finds his wand — or rather, the wand finds him. Mr. Ollivander remembers every wand he's sold and tells Harry this with a gravity that means nothing yet and will mean everything later.
A long, winding cobblestoned street packed with colorful shopfronts — Ollivanders (wands), Flourish and Blotts (books), Madam Malkin's (robes), Eeylops Owl Emporium, Quality Quidditch Supplies, and dozens more. The street buzzes with witches and wizards in robes, children pressing noses to shop windows, owls hooting from cages. Gringotts Wizarding Bank rises at the far end, a snow-white marble building with bronze doors guarded by goblins.
