A legendary blood-red stone created by the alchemist Nicolas Flamel that produces the Elixir of Life and can transform any metal into pure gold — hidden at Hogwarts, guarded by enchantments, and hunted by Voldemort.
The Philosopher's Stone is the only one of its kind, created by Nicolas Flamel sometime in the fourteenth century. Flamel and his wife Perenelle have used the Elixir of Life to survive for over six hundred years. When Dumbledore learned that Voldemort was seeking the Stone to restore his body, he moved it from Gringotts vault 713 to Hogwarts and set a series of protections: Hagrid's three-headed dog Fluffy (soothed by music), Professor Sprout's Devil's Snare, Professor Flitwick's enchanted flying keys, McGonagall's giant chess set, Quirrell's troll, Snape's logic puzzle with potions, and finally the Mirror of Erised itself. The Mirror was the true defense — it would only yield the Stone to someone who wanted to find it but not use it. Harry, who wanted to save the Stone from Voldemort rather than use it for himself, felt it materialize in his pocket. After Quirrell's defeat, Dumbledore and Flamel agreed to destroy the Stone. The Flamels had enough Elixir stored to set their affairs in order, and then they would die — choosing mortality over the risk of the Stone being used for evil.
A small, rough, blood-red stone — unimpressive to look at, easily mistaken for an ordinary rock. Its power is entirely disproportionate to its size. When Harry retrieved it from the Mirror of Erised, he felt it drop into his pocket — it was no larger than a walnut.
