Voldemort in Philosopher's Stone is not yet the fully restored Dark Lord of later books. He is a wraith — a spirit without a body, surviving by possessing Professor Quirrell and feeding on unicorn blood, which sustains life but curses the drinker. He speaks softly, almost gently, and uses Quirrell as a puppet, seeing through his eyes and whispering instructions from beneath the turban. He came to Hogwarts for one reason: the Philosopher's Stone, which can produce the Elixir of Life and restore him to a body. He cannot touch Harry — Lily Potter's sacrifice left a protection in Harry's skin that burns Voldemort on contact. He does not yet understand why. His name is spoken only in whispers, and most of the wizarding world calls him He Who Must Not Be Named or You-Know-Who. Ten years ago he killed Harry's parents and tried to kill Harry. The curse rebounded. He vanished. Now he is back, and he is patient, and he is hungry.
Has no body of his own. When revealed beneath Quirrell's turban, he appears as a terrible face on the back of Quirrell's head — chalk-white, with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snake pressed flat against a skull. His voice is high and cold, a whisper that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere. He exists as a shade, a fragment, barely clinging to life through sheer will and dark magic.
