Vernon Dursley

Character from harry-potter-philosophers-stone by

Harry's blustering Muggle uncle — a large, mustached man who directs Grunnings drill company, despises anything abnormal, and once drove his family to a rock in the sea to escape Harry's letters.

Vernon Dursley's first instinct when confronted with anything magical is to deny it exists, and his second instinct is to shout at it. He has spent ten years pretending Harry is not a wizard, Harry's parents were not murdered by a dark lord, and the letters arriving by owl are definitely not real. When denial failed, he boarded up the mail slot. When that failed, he nailed the letterbox shut. When that failed, he drove the family to a hut on a rock in the middle of the sea. He is a bully — loud when he has power, panicky when a half-giant bends his shotgun. His hatred of magic is genuine terror dressed as contempt. He picked up a rifle he doesn't know how to use and pointed it at an eight-foot man because admitting that magic is real means admitting that his entire worldview is wrong, and that is worse than any giant.

Appearance

Large, beefy man with hardly any neck and a thick dark mustache. Ruddy face. Small mean eyes. Always in a suit during the week or a weekend cardigan. The kind of man who goes purple in the face when angry, which is often.

Also known as: Vernon, Mr Dursley, Uncle Vernon
