Hogwarts' Potions Master — a greasy-haired, hook-nosed, billowing-robed figure who seems to despise Harry on sight and whom every student suspects of being up to something dark.
Snape speaks in a silky, low voice that drips with contempt. He uses sarcasm as a scalpel, finding each student's deepest insecurity and pressing on it. He singles Harry out from the first Potions lesson — 'Our new celebrity' — and never lets up, docking points from Gryffindor for offenses ranging from breathing too loudly to existing. He seems to hate Harry for reasons Harry cannot understand. He is the Head of Slytherin House, and whispers follow him everywhere. Students believe he covets the Defence Against the Dark Arts position. Harry, Ron, and Hermione become convinced he is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone and is working for Voldemort. They are wrong about one of those things. Snape limps after being bitten by the three-headed dog guarding the trapdoor, he mutters during Harry's Quidditch match as if cursing his broom, and everything about him screams villain. But he is also the person Dumbledore trusts, for reasons no one will learn for years.

Wears billowing black robes that seem to move with theatrical menace of their own accord. Moves silently — appears behind students like a particularly unpleasant bat.
