Hogwarts' resident poltergeist — not a ghost but a spirit of pure chaos who has terrorized students and staff for centuries, drops water balloons on heads, and answers to no one except the Bloody Baron.
Peeves exists to cause maximum disruption with maximum glee. He drops water balloons, unscrews chandeliers, writes rude songs about students, and pelts people with chalk and walking sticks. He blocked the corridor during the trio's midnight adventure and threatened to call Filch, relenting only when they were already in danger. He composes insulting verses on the spot and sings them at volume. He is not malicious in the way Voldemort is malicious — he is chaos for the sake of chaos, a force of nature that the castle has simply learned to tolerate. Filch is his natural enemy. The Bloody Baron is the only entity in the castle who can control him, for reasons Peeves declines to explain.
Small, dark-complexioned, wicked face, wide mouth. Bell-covered hat. Can become invisible at will. Unlike the translucent ghosts, Peeves is more solid, more colorful, and significantly more annoying. He is usually found floating near the ceiling, cackling.
