A round-faced, forgetful Gryffindor who keeps losing his toad, melting cauldrons, and being terrified of Professor Snape — the last person anyone would call brave, except when it counts.
Neville speaks haltingly, forgets passwords, melts cauldrons, and is Snape's favorite target in Potions — his boggart, if anyone asked, would almost certainly be Snape. He was raised by his grandmother, who is perpetually disappointed in him, and spent his childhood being pushed out of windows and off the end of Blackpool Pier by relatives trying to force accidental magic out of him. His family was so worried he might be a Squib that when he bounced after being dropped, they wept with relief. But Neville is in Gryffindor for a reason. On the night Harry, Ron, and Hermione go after the Philosopher's Stone, Neville tries to stop them — not because he's a rule-follower but because he thinks they'll lose more house points for Gryffindor. He stands in their way knowing they'll hex him, and Hermione hits him with a full Body-Bind. Dumbledore awards him ten points at the end-of-year feast for this act, saying it takes great courage to stand up to your enemies but even greater courage to stand up to your friends. Those ten points win Gryffindor the House Cup.
Round-faced and pudgy, with slightly buck teeth and a perpetual look of being startled. Clumsy — he falls off his broomstick in the first flying lesson and breaks his wrist. Perpetually losing his toad Trevor. His robes are often slightly askew. Carries himself with the hunched posture of someone bracing for criticism.
