Hogwarts under Umbridge is Hogwarts in mourning. The Educational Decrees multiply across the walls like a rash -- no student organizations, no unauthorized publications, no teachers discussing subjects outside their approved curriculum. The Inquisitorial Squad prowls with borrowed authority. Filch hangs new rules with visible joy. The staff resist in small, precise ways -- McGonagall corrects Umbridge's authority with procedural exactness, Flitwick leaves a swamp on the fifth floor because he's not quite sure it's in his jurisdiction, and Peeves has declared open war. But the castle resists too. The Room of Requirement opens for students who need it. The portraits pass messages. The staircases seem to redirect Umbridge more than anyone else. Hogwarts has stood for a thousand years and has endured threats far worse than a toad in a pink cardigan. The DA meets in secret, the staff protect what they can, and the students learn the most important lesson of the year: that some authorities don't deserve obedience.
