The vast, dangerous woodland on the Hogwarts grounds -- this year home to Grawp the giant, a centaur herd that has declared Firenze a traitor, and the centaurs who drag Umbridge away.
The Forbidden Forest is more politically charged this year than usual. Hagrid has hidden Grawp -- his full-giant half-brother -- in a clearing deep within, and the giant's presence has upset the centaur herd. The centaurs are already furious about Firenze leaving the herd to teach Divination at Hogwarts, considering it a betrayal of their kind. When Umbridge enters the forest and calls the centaurs 'filthy half-breeds,' they carry her off into the trees, and only Dumbledore can get her back. Hermione lures Umbridge into the forest deliberately, knowing the centaurs' temperament. It is the Forbidden Forest's finest hour: the place that every authority figure warns you to avoid becomes the weapon that defeats the greatest authority figure of them all.
Dense, towering trees so old their canopy blocks most sunlight even at midday. The undergrowth is thick with ferns and brambles. Mist clings to the lower trunks at dawn. At night the forest is impenetrable black, punctuated by the gleam of eyes and the crack of branches under large, unseen bodies.
