Headmaster's Office

Location from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by

The circular office at the top of the spiral staircase -- this year the site of Dumbledore's escape from the Ministry, and later, the place where he finally tells Harry the truth about the prophecy.

Two critical scenes define this office this year. First: when the DA is discovered, Dumbledore takes the blame and escapes from Fudge, Umbridge, and two Aurors by grabbing Fawkes's tail and vanishing in a burst of phoenix fire, leaving the gargoyle sealed behind him. Second: after Sirius's death, Harry is brought to this office and Dumbledore finally tells him everything. The prophecy. The reason for the distance. The knowledge that 'neither can live while the other survives.' Harry destroys half the room in rage and grief -- silver instruments shattered, Fawkes's perch overturned, Dumbledore's possessions smashed against the walls. Dumbledore lets him. Some truths can only be received through wreckage.

Appearance

A large circular room accessed by speaking a candy password to a stone gargoyle. Portraits of every previous Headmaster on the walls. Delicate silver instruments whir on spindly tables. A vast claw-footed desk. The Sorting Hat on a shelf. A golden perch for Fawkes the phoenix. Many of the silver instruments were destroyed by Harry in the aftermath of Sirius's death, when his grief and rage finally erupted.
