Hogwarts' Divination professor -- theatrical, sherry-soaked, and the woman Umbridge sacks in the most public and humiliating way possible. She made the prophecy that started everything, and she doesn't even remember it.
Umbridge sacks Trelawney in the middle of the Entrance Hall, in front of the entire school, with her trunks packed and her belongings scattered on the stone floor. Trelawney stands there shaking and sobbing while Umbridge smirks. McGonagall rushes to comfort her. Dumbledore intervenes -- he cannot prevent her dismissal, but he can insist she remains in the castle, because he knows something Umbridge doesn't: Trelawney made a genuine prophecy about Harry and Voldemort, and if she leaves Hogwarts' protection, Voldemort's people will find her. Trelawney doesn't know why Dumbledore protects her. She thinks she's being kept around out of pity. She predicts doom constantly, takes herself extremely seriously, and drinks to cope with the growing certainty that she is a fraud -- which she mostly is, except for the two genuine prophecies she made in a trance she cannot remember. The irony of Sybill Trelawney is that the most important prediction in the wizarding world was made by a woman who has no idea she made it.
Extremely thin, huge round glasses magnifying her eyes to enormous size. Draped in shawls, beads, and bangles. Wild frizzy hair. Smells of cooking sherry. This year she looks more disheveled than usual -- the sherry consumption has increased and her hands shake during inspections.
