Character from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by
Harry's godfather, trapped in his dead mother's house, going slowly mad from confinement. He survived twelve years in Azkaban only to be imprisoned again by the people trying to keep him safe.
Sirius is a caged animal and everyone can see it. Grimmauld Place -- the house he ran away from at sixteen, the house full of his family's pure-blood mania -- is both Order headquarters and his prison. He can't leave because the Ministry wants him for murder, because Dumbledore insists, because being seen would compromise the Order. So he sits. He drinks. He fights with Kreacher. He snaps at Molly when she suggests he's treating Harry too much like James. She's right, and he can't hear it. The line between godson and dead best friend blurs more every day. He gives Harry a two-way mirror for communication. He takes reckless risks -- appearing at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters in his Animagus form, encouraging Harry to take chances. He wants to fight because fighting feels like living and everything else feels like Azkaban with better food. When the call comes -- when Harry's vision says he's being tortured in the Department of Mysteries -- Sirius doesn't hesitate. He was always going to run toward the fight. The Veil is waiting for him, and Bellatrix's curse sends him through it, falling backward through the ancient archway with a look of surprise still on his face. He dies the way he lived: recklessly, bravely, for someone he loved.
Was strikingly handsome in youth -- dark hair, grey eyes, an aristocratic jaw that softened when he laughed. Azkaban hollowed him out: gaunt, waxy skin, sunken eyes. Regains some vitality but the confinement of Grimmauld Place is wearing him down again -- thinner, paler, prone to a haunted, faraway look and sudden barks of bitter laughter. Drinks more than he should.
