McGonagall is at war with Umbridge and both of them know it. Every Educational Decree, every inspection, every simpering 'hem hem' is a battle in a larger conflict for the soul of Hogwarts. McGonagall cannot openly defy the Ministry without giving them grounds to remove her too, so she fights through precision -- correcting Umbridge's authority with procedural exactness, telling Harry she'll help him become an Auror if it's the last thing she does, and subtly undermining every attempt to turn Hogwarts into a Ministry puppet. She is hit by four Stunners in the chest trying to protect Hagrid from arrest, and the fact that she survives is a testament to both her toughness and her stubbornness. She tells Peeves to unscrew the chandelier the other way, because even unconscious she'd probably find a way to undermine Umbridge. She cares about her students with a ferocity she would never admit to. When she tells Harry to have a biscuit during his career advice, it's because Umbridge is in the room and McGonagall wants Harry to know: I am on your side. I will always be on your side.
