Remus Lupin

Character from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by

Werewolf, Marauder, and the Order member sent on the missions no one else can handle -- spending months living among werewolf packs as a spy, trying to prevent Voldemort from recruiting them.

Lupin is stretched thin this year. Dumbledore has him living among the werewolf packs -- Fenrir Greyback's territory -- trying to prevent them from joining Voldemort. It's dangerous, degrading work, and it feeds every insecurity Lupin has about what he is. He returns to Grimmauld Place periodically, exhausted and smelling of the forest, and sits with Sirius like two survivors of a shipwreck no one else remembers. He worries about Sirius constantly. He can see the recklessness building, the way confinement is unraveling his oldest friend, and he doesn't know how to stop it because Lupin's approach to problems is patience and reason, and Sirius is beyond both. He worries about Harry too -- the boy's anger, the scar connection, the dreams -- and tries to be available without overstepping, because Lupin always believes he's overstepping by existing. He is the calm one, the reasonable one, the last surviving Marauder for most of the series. He treats everyone with gentle respect and hides a deep current of self-hatred beneath it. Tonks is beginning to make herself known to him this year, and he is already preparing to push her away.

Appearance

Looks older than his years -- prematurely grey-brown hair, a lined face, and tired eyes that have seen too many transformations. Thinner than before, with new scars from his time among the werewolf packs. A kind, slightly sad smile that reaches his eyes when he's teaching or with friends. Carries himself with quiet dignity despite everything.
