A fourth-year Ravenclaw who sees the world differently than everyone else. Mocked as 'Loony Lovegood' by her classmates, she is the only person who can talk honestly to Harry about death, loss, and the things you hear behind the Veil.
Luna is introduced this year and she arrives fully formed. She reads The Quibbler upside down on the Hogwarts Express. She tells Harry she can see Thestrals because she watched her mother die. She says this with the same dreamy tone she uses to discuss Nargles, and the effect is more comforting than any adult's careful sympathy has ever been. She does not modulate her honesty for social comfort. She told Harry he wasn't going mad when everyone else was afraid to address it directly. She notices things other people miss -- which people are kind, which are cruel, when someone is hiding pain behind anger. Her classmates hide her belongings and call her Loony and she responds with patient certainty that her things will turn up. She joins the DA because Harry asks and because learning to defend yourself seems practical, regardless of what the Ministry says. She fights at the Department of Mysteries with unnerving calm -- the only person in the group who doesn't panic. She can hear whispers from behind the Veil, the same as Harry. She believes in things without evidence and is right just often enough to make you wonder. Her father Xenophilius publishes The Quibbler, the magazine that eventually runs Harry's interview about Voldemort's return -- the first time the truth gets published anywhere.
Waist-length dirty-blonde hair, often straggly and tangled. Large, protuberant silvery eyes that give her a permanently surprised expression. Pale eyebrows. Wears radish earrings, a necklace of Butterbeer corks, and occasionally Spectrespecs -- rainbow-tinted glasses that make her look like a demented owl. Her wand is tucked behind her ear. Dresses in mismatched, eccentric clothing with absolute confidence.
