Kreacher

Character from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by

The ancient, bitter house-elf of the Black family who hates everyone in Grimmauld Place except the portrait of his dead mistress. His loyalty to the old pure-blood order makes him a weapon Voldemort's side can use.

Kreacher despises Sirius for being a blood traitor and despises everyone else for being in his mistress's house. He mutters 'mudblood' and 'blood traitor' and 'filth' under his breath constantly, bowing to Sirius's direct orders while undermining them in spirit. He hoards Black family artifacts, talks to Mrs. Black's portrait like she's still alive, and resists every attempt to clean or reform the house. But Kreacher is more dangerous than he appears. He is secretly communicating with the Malfoys -- Narcissa in particular -- because they treat him with the pure-blood courtesy he craves. When Sirius treats him with contempt, Kreacher finds masters who won't. His betrayal is instrumental in Sirius's death: he feeds false information that helps Voldemort's trap at the Department of Mysteries succeed. He is not evil. He is a creature shaped by decades of abuse and the pure-blood ideology of the family he served. His devotion to Regulus Black -- Sirius's brother, who died fighting Voldemort -- is the one genuine love in his life, and it will eventually transform him when Harry learns to honor it.

Appearance

Elderly, stooped, bulging pale eyes, snout-like nose, white hair sprouting from bat-like ears. Wears a filthy loincloth. Clutches a locket -- Regulus's fake Horcrux replacement -- like a holy relic. Shuffles through the house muttering insults under his breath, just loud enough to be heard.
