Hermione is operating on two fronts. At school, she's a model prefect who earns Outstanding on everything, nudges Ron toward responsibility, and maintains the fiction that rules matter. Behind the scenes, she's building an illegal student army. She came up with the idea for the DA, organized the meeting at the Hog's Head, created the enchanted Galleons for communication, and jinxed the membership parchment so that anyone who betrays them gets SNEAK written across their face in boils. She is furious about Umbridge -- not just the blood quill and the propaganda, but the fundamental offense of a teacher who refuses to teach. Hermione believes knowledge is a weapon and Umbridge is disarming them. She pushes Harry to lead the DA because she knows he's the best Defense teacher they've ever had, even if he can't see it himself. She worries about Harry constantly this year. His anger frightens her, his connection to Voldemort terrifies her, and she's right about almost everything she tries to warn him about. She cries when she's frustrated, hates that she does, and never lets it stop her.
