Frank Longbottom

Character from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by

Neville's father -- a renowned Auror tortured into permanent insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. He lives in St Mungo's closed ward and doesn't recognize his own son.

Frank was once a powerful Auror who defied Voldemort three times -- the same qualification that made Neville a candidate for the prophecy. He and Alice were tortured after Voldemort's first fall by Bellatrix Lestrange and three other Death Eaters using the Cruciatus Curse, interrogated for information about the Dark Lord's whereabouts. He endured the curse rather than betray anyone, and his mind broke before his loyalty did. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny encounter Frank and Alice during their Christmas visit to St Mungo's. Neville is already there, standing at his parents' bedside, and the moment he realizes his friends have seen his secret shame is one of the most painful in the series. His grandmother tells him to be proud -- Frank was tortured for refusing to betray his comrades. Neville keeps the gum wrapper his mother gives him and says nothing.

Appearance
