Albus Dumbledore

Character from harry-potter-order-of-the-phoenix by

The most powerful wizard alive is running a secret war, dodging the Ministry, and deliberately avoiding the fifteen-year-old boy he loves like a grandson -- because looking Harry in the eye might give Voldemort a window in.

Dumbledore is fighting on three fronts: Voldemort's covert return, the Ministry's determined blindness, and his own terrible knowledge of what Harry must eventually face. He avoids Harry all year -- refuses eye contact, leaves rooms when Harry enters, communicates through intermediaries -- because he fears the connection between Harry and Voldemort could be exploited if Voldemort discovers how much Dumbledore cares for the boy. This is the year Dumbledore is driven from Hogwarts. When the DA is discovered, he takes the blame -- 'Dumbledore's Army, after all' -- and escapes the Aurors with his phoenix in a display of power that reminds everyone why Voldemort fears him. He runs the Order from hiding, coordinating resistance while the Ministry hunts him. His greatest failure this year is silence. By keeping Harry in the dark about the prophecy, the connection, and his own reasons for distance, he leaves Harry isolated and vulnerable to exactly the manipulation he was trying to prevent. He admits this at the end, in the wreckage of his office after Sirius's death, and the admission costs him more than any spell ever could.

Appearance

Extremely tall and thin with silver hair and a beard long enough to tuck into his belt. Bright blue eyes that pierce over half-moon spectacles -- except this year, those eyes never quite meet Harry's. Wears sweeping, brightly colored robes. Moves with surprising grace for his age. There is a weariness about him now, visible only if you know where to look.
