Draco is terrified. Voldemort gave him the task of killing Dumbledore — punishment for Lucius's failure at the Ministry. If Draco fails, his family dies. He spends the year in the Room of Requirement, repairing a Vanishing Cabinet that will let Death Eaters enter Hogwarts from its twin in Borgin and Burkes. He poisons mead meant for Dumbledore (Ron drinks it instead). He sends a cursed necklace (Katie Bell touches it). Both attempts are clumsy, desperate, the work of a boy in over his head. He cries in Myrtle's bathroom. Harry finds him there and they duel — Harry uses Sectumsempra and nearly kills him. On the Astronomy Tower, wand raised at Dumbledore, Draco hesitates. His wand hand shakes. Dumbledore offers mercy. Draco lowers his wand. Snape does what Draco cannot.
