The destroyed Horcrux from Harry's second year — a small black diary that once contained a fragment of Voldemort's soul. Its destruction two years ago was the first step on a path Harry doesn't yet understand.
The diary is referenced this year but not present — it was destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets two years ago. Its significance is growing in Dumbledore's mind: the diary was not just a cursed object but something far worse, a vessel containing a piece of Voldemort's soul. Dumbledore is beginning to piece together the theory of Horcruxes, and the diary is the first evidence. Harry doesn't know any of this. To him, the diary was the thing that possessed Ginny and tried to kill him in a basement. The word 'Horcrux' is still years away.
A thin, black, shabby-looking diary stabbed through with a Basilisk fang, ink-blood staining its pages. Destroyed. What remains is in Dumbledore's possession, being studied for clues about the nature of Voldemort's darkest magic.
