Ron doesn't believe Harry. That's the wound at the center of this year. When the Goblet spits out Harry's name, Ron looks at his best friend and sees someone who found a way in without telling him — someone who always gets the spotlight, the money, the fame, while Ron stands in the background wearing second-hand robes. The jealousy is ugly and Ron knows it's ugly and he can't stop it because the feeling is older than the Triwizard Tournament. It's every Christmas where Harry gets better presents. Every time someone says 'Harry Potter and his friend.' He comes back. After the first task — after watching Harry face a Hungarian Horntail and nearly die — the jealousy breaks against something harder: the realization that he almost lost his best friend while giving him the silent treatment. The reconciliation is clumsy and wordless, which is how Ron handles every emotion he can't joke about. He takes Padma Patil to the Yule Ball but spends the entire night glaring at Hermione dancing with Krum, which he would deny under Veritaserum. He doesn't understand why he's angry. Everyone else does.
