Hagrid is in love and it is the most obvious thing in the castle. He combs his hair, wears terrible suits, and attempts to explain Blast-Ended Skrewts with an enthusiasm that impresses no one. He takes Madame Maxime to see the dragons before the first task — which is how Harry finds out about the Hungarian Horntail — because nothing says romance to Hagrid quite like enormous fire-breathing reptiles. Rita Skeeter publishes an article revealing Hagrid is half-giant, and the cruelty of the public response nearly destroys him. He locks himself in his hut and refuses to teach. It takes Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dumbledore to bring him back, because Hagrid cannot believe that people who know what he is would still want him around. He has never learned that the people who love him love him because of who he is, not in spite of it.
