Hogwarts' bitter Squib caretaker, patrolling the corridors with Mrs Norris and enforcing rules with the enthusiasm of a man who would bring back flogging if given the chance.
Filch is a Squib in a castle full of magic, and that humiliation has curdled into rage directed at every student he encounters. This year he has extra duties — monitoring the corridors during the Tournament, checking invitations at the Yule Ball, and generally making himself as unpleasant as possible at events designed to be festive. He memorizes rule infractions with obsessive glee and keeps a filing cabinet of every student he's ever caught. He patrols at night, appears in corridors at the worst possible moments, and lives for the day punishments are restored to their medieval glory. Mrs Norris is his only companion and his only friend, and she takes her surveillance duties as seriously as he does.
Thin, hunched, jowly face, bulging pale eyes, stringy grey hair. Dusty brown coat. Always accompanied by Mrs Norris, a skeletal dust-colored cat with lamp-like eyes. The cat reports student infractions telepathically, or so it seems.
