When Moody Transfigures him into a ferret and bounces him off the dungeon floor, the humiliation is so complete that it follows him for the rest of the year. He is fourteen and his cruelty is still theatrical rather than dangerous — school-yard bullying with a pure-blood accent. His father's influence hovers over everything he does, from the badges to the insults to the casual Muggle-born slurs he drops without thinking.
