Why Harry survived: Voldemort used Harry's blood in his resurrection, and as long as Lily's protection lives in Voldemort's body, Harry is tethered to life. The Killing Curse destroyed the piece of Voldemort's soul in Harry's scar but left Harry himself intact. The flayed thing under the bench is the fragment of Voldemort's soul -- beyond help, beyond pity, the result of a man who tore himself apart to avoid death. Dumbledore weeps. He tells Harry about Grindelwald, about Ariana, about 'the greater good.' He is not the saint Harry believed. He is a man who made terrible mistakes and spent his life trying to atone. Harry can choose: board a train and move on, or go back. He goes back.
