Ancient, dark woodland on the Hogwarts grounds -- where Voldemort made his camp, where Harry walked willingly to his death, and where the Resurrection Stone fell from his hand and was lost forever.
The Forbidden Forest is where Harry goes to die. He walks into the trees under the Invisibility Cloak, turns the Resurrection Stone three times, and summons the shades of his parents, Sirius, and Lupin. They walk beside him. His mother tells him to be brave. They are proud of him. They love him. Voldemort waits in a clearing surrounded by Death Eaters. Harry drops the stone, steps forward, and does not draw his wand. The Killing Curse hits him. He falls. And because Voldemort used Harry's blood in his resurrection -- because Lily's protection lives in Voldemort's body -- Harry survives. He wakes on the forest floor. Narcissa kneels over him and lies to Voldemort's face. The forest, old and indifferent and full of dark things, held the most important moment in the wizarding world. The Resurrection Stone was never found again.
Dense towering trees blocking sunlight. Thick undergrowth, twisting paths. At night, impenetrable black punctuated by gleaming eyes. Voldemort's camp burns with cold green fire between the ancient trunks. Spiders, centaurs, and thestrals move in the deeper dark.
