Goblin-made silver sword impregnated with Basilisk venom -- it appears to any true Gryffindor in need. Snape delivered it to Harry. Ron used it to destroy the locket. Neville pulled it from the burning Sorting Hat to kill Nagini.
The Sword is the through-line of courage in the final book. Snape, following Dumbledore's portrait's instructions, placed it at the bottom of a frozen forest pool, guided there by his doe Patronus. Harry dove in wearing the locket Horcrux -- which tried to strangle him underwater -- and Ron pulled him out and retrieved the Sword. Ron destroyed the locket. Later, Harry gave the Sword to Griphook as payment for the Gringotts break-in, and Griphook took it and betrayed them. But the Sword appears to those who need it. In the battle's climax, Neville -- standing alone before Voldemort, the Sorting Hat burning on his head -- reached inside and pulled out the Sword of Gryffindor. He beheaded Nagini in a single stroke. The final Horcrux was destroyed. The Sword chose its champions well.
Gleaming silver sword with egg-sized rubies in the hilt. GODRIC GRYFFINDOR engraved on the blade. Permanently impregnated with Basilisk venom, making it one of the few objects that can destroy Horcruxes.
