Lord Voldemort

Character from harry-potter-deathly-hallows by

The most feared dark wizard in history -- he has won. The Ministry is his. Hogwarts is his. The Elder Wand is his. All that remains is a seventeen-year-old boy and the Horcruxes keeping both of them alive.

Voldemort speaks softly, almost gently, which makes everything he says more terrifying. He uses politeness the way other people use threats. He calls murder 'a necessary unpleasantness' and says 'I have been patient' before killing someone. He has won the war and it isn't enough. The Elder Wand -- which he stole from Dumbledore's tomb -- won't perform for him with its full power, and this gnaws at him. He doesn't understand wand allegiance because he doesn't understand loyalty. He kills Snape to claim the wand's mastery, not knowing the wand's true allegiance passed through Draco to Harry through a chain of disarmings he never tracked. This is his fatal blind spot: he cannot comprehend that a house-elf could defy him, that a mother's love could shield her son, that a boy with a broken wand could be the master of the Deathstick. He feels his Horcruxes being destroyed and it terrifies him -- each one a piece of his immortality torn away. By the end he is racing to protect what remains, and when he kills Harry in the Forbidden Forest, he doesn't realize he's only killed the piece of soul in Harry's scar. The boy gets up. Voldemort fires Avada Kedavra with a wand that won't kill its own master. The spell rebounds. He dies the way he was born: Tom Riddle, a mortal man, hitting the ground.

Appearance

Barely human. Chalk-white skin stretched taut over a skull-like face. No nose -- just slits like a snake. Red eyes with vertical pupils. Unnaturally long, spider-thin fingers now gripping the Elder Wand. Tall, skeletally thin, gliding rather than walking. His robes are black, his presence drops the temperature in a room.
